It’s hard to shock Amy Dickinson. In just 18 months as nationally syndicated advice columnist “Ask Amy,” Dickinson has dealt with a range of provocative issues. Her no-nonsense, shoot-from-the-hip opinions have riled readers and generated floods of letters both praising and berating her. But even the unflappable Dickinson was caught off guard by the firestorm of controversy set off by a letter she ran in a recent column.
Just what was this incendiary topic? Cheating spouses, family feuds or out-of-control teens? Noisy neighbors, obnoxious co-workers or overbearing in-laws? Mooching friends, tantrum-throwing toddlers or schoolyard bullies?
“None of the above,” says Dickinson. “It was senior discounts.”
The maelstrom was set off by a letter from a middle-aged woman who relayed how devastated she was to be offered a senior discount because she was not yet old enough to qualify. After she made her purchase, the woman wrote that she started to cry.
Amy’s response: “Dry your tears, my dear — 55 is the new 40. I don’t mean to be too hard on you, but do you have your health? Are you basically in good shape? Do you look good ‘for your age?’ If you’ve answered yes to these questions, you don’t get to gripe over growing older. … A good answer to give a sales associate who offers this discount might be, ‘A 10-percent discount?
