The US government offers a program called Lifeline Assistance that can reduce the cost of phone and internet services, if you qualify.

Sadly, Lifeline Assistance no longer provides free cell phones alongside their discounted services. But you may find that some of the wireless providers offering free plans through the Lifeline program still offer a free cell phone or free SIM kit. Most cell phone providers participating in the Lifeline program also participate in the Affordable Connectivity Program, which can get you a cell phone or tablet at a discounted price of about $10.

To qualify for Lifeline Assistance, you either have to have an income at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, or be currently enrolled in any of the following government programs:

If you qualify for Lifeline Assistance due to having an income below 135% of prevailing Federal poverty guidelines, you must prove your eligibility. There are several documents that you must attach to your application, including the following:

  • Latest paycheck stubs or current income statement from your employer
  • Workers’ compensation or unemployment benefits statements
  • Previous year’s tax returns

Verizon offers a wireless plan made specifically for seniors, the Verizon 55+ plan. This plan will give you unlimited talk, text, and data. It starts at $40 per month when you sign up for two lines. One sole line will cost $60 per month. Considering this plan also includes service to Mexico and Canada and unlimited mobile hotspot usage, this is a great deal. Unfortunately, this plan is currently available only to residents of Florida who are age 55 or older.

Free Government Cell Phones

Verizon Wireless is authorized to participate in Lifeline and offers services in four states. This subsidized benefit makes phone services more affordable for many low-income families, as well as individuals. In most cases, the Lifeline discount provides phone and free minutes every month.

As with all program recipients, you must be a resident of one of the states listed above and currently participating in a government assistance program.
