Illinois Secretary Of State White Extends Driver’s License Id Card Expiration Dates Until July

CHICAGO — Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced Friday that expiration dates for driver’s licenses and ID cards have been extended until July.

Driver’s license and ID card expiration dates had previously been extended to March 31, 2022. Now, expired driver’s licenses and ID cards will remain valid until July 31, 2022. The extension does not apply to commercial driver’s licenses and CDL learner’s permits.

The Secretary of State’s Office said it has expended remote renewal for driver’s license and ID card holders. Letters have been sent to eligible customers with expired driver’s licenses and ID cards requiring them to renew online, by phone or by mail.

Those who are required to visit a facility include first-time driver’s license or ID card applicants, first-time REAL ID applicants and drivers ages 75 and older.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the federal REAL ID deadline to May 3, 2023.

Unlike most state licensing authorities, the Illinois Secretary of State will accept information about potentially unsafe drivers only from police officers.

But an Illinois law mandates that doctors must encourage patients of their own responsibilities to notify the Secretary of State of any medical conditions that may cause a loss of consciousness or affect their abilities to drive safely within 10 days of becoming aware of those conditions.

Drivers who are required to report their medical conditions must also complete a Medical Report Form every time they renew their licenses.

Ride Free Transit Card

Seniors and persons with disabilities who are approved by the Benefit Access Program may then apply to the Regional Transportation Authority . The Illinois Department on Aging will notify the RTA of your eligibility. The RTA will process your application for the Ride Free Transit Card and mail the card directly to the applicant in 6 to 8 weeks. Applicants should notify the RTA of any address changes directly at 312-913-3110.

The Senior Services office may assist you in completing this application along with photo service for $2. When applying, your drivers license or state ID must have your current address.

The Rules of the Road Review Course is designed to give drivers especially senior citizens and persons with disabilities the knowledge and confidence needed to renew or obtain a driver’s license.

Super Seniors

Super Seniors is a convenient and voluntary program for driver’s license renewal, which includes Rules of the Road classroom instruction, and a vision-screening exam. The Rules of the Road Review Course also includes a review of safe driving techniques and Illinois driving laws.

A Secretary of State Mobile Driver Services Unit will be available for participants to renew their driver’s licenses. An identification card can be obtained for $20.00 however, if you are age 65 and older you may obtain a free, non-expiring State of Illinois photo ID card. Drivers age 75 and older are required to take a driving test to renew their driver’s licenses therefore they must visit a Driver Services Facility.

Illinois Secretary Of State’s Office Extends Driver’s License Expiration Date To Dec 1

CHICAGO Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that expiration dates for driver’s licenses, ID cards, and learner’s permits have been extended until Dec. 1, 2022.

The previous extension was set to end on July 31, according to a news release. As a result, expired driver’s licenses, ID cards and learner’s permits will remain valid until Dec. 1, so customers do not need to rush into Driver Services facilities.

The extension does not apply to commercial driver’s license and CDL learner’s permits.

White’s office expanded online renewals for expired driver’s licenses and ID cards and continues to mail letters to eligible customers. The letter provides driver’s license and ID card holder with a unique PIN needed to renew online instead of visiting a facility and waiting in line.

Customers may call 217-785-1424 to confirm their eligibility for online renewal or to obtain their PIN.

They may also visit apps.ilsos.gov/renewaldlil/eligigle.jsp to look up their eligibility status.

Customers who must visit a facility include first-time driver’s license or ID card applicants, first-time REAL ID applicants and drivers age 75 and older who are required by state law to visit a facility when renewing their license.

White’s office is also extending the expiration dates for restricted driving permits to Dec. 1, 2022 for those that expired on or after Dec. 1, 2021 through Dec. 1, 2022.

Illinois Secretary Of State’s Office Expands Appointment Program For Driver Services Facilities

Illinois drivers can renew their licenses for 4 years between ages 69 and 80. Up to the age of 86, they can renew for 2 years. After 87 years of age, the license needs to be renewed annually.

Illinois drivers who are younger than 74 years of age can opt for the Safe Driver Renewal. Drivers who are 75 years of age or older at the time their current driver license expires are generally required to renew their license in person at a local VSD office. In any case, all motorists have to take a vision test . Moreover, all drivers will be asked to take a written knowledge test every 8 years, unless they have no traffic violations.

License Plate Fee Discount For One Vehicle

The Illinois Department on Aging will notify the Illinois Secretary of State that you have been approved. You must allow 10 business days for the Secretary of State to have your eligibility information on record. You must purchase your license plate sticker at a Secretary of State Office.

The discount may not be available at a currency exchange or bank. Refunds will only be available to approved Benefit Access participants who are in their eligibility period.

“Secretary White emphasized that seniors, persons with disabilities and expectant mothers will be served as walk-ins at all 16 of the designated appointment facilities,” White’s office said.

Some facilities, including those in rural Illinois facilities, will not require appointments. Others will remain accessible to walk-in customers, including Deerfield, Elgin, Chicago Central and the temporary facility at Prairie State College in Chicago Heights.

Over the next six months, White also will expand remote renewal so approximately 1 million more people can renew their driver’s licenses and ID cards online, by phone or by mail. Those who qualify for the program should receive a letter in the mail, he said.

“During the pandemic, my office has continued to serve the public, including face-to-face transactions, in a safe and responsible manner, White said in a statement. “Throughout this time, we also greatly expanded online services. This next step will allow many more people to renew their drivers licenses or ID cards remotely instead of visiting a Driver Services facility.”

Parts of the Department on Aging’s Benefit Access Program, formerly known as the Circuit Breaker Program, allows for the Secretary of State’s office to provide for a reduced-fee license plates aimed toward senior citizens and persons with disabilities with specific qualifications.

Illinois License Renewal Rules For Older Drivers

Special rules apply to older drivers who seek to renew their licenses. Drivers age 75 and over may not renew by mail.

Time limits: Drivers age 21 through 80 are issued licenses that are good for four years that expire on their birthdays.

Those ages 81 through 86 must renew their licenses every two years.

And drivers age 87 and older must renew their licenses every year.

The Illinois Secretary of State operates the Super Seniors Program, a voluntary mobile program that goes to libraries, senior centers, and park districts and helps seniors ages 74 and under renew their licenses by giving both Rules of the Road classroom instruction and a vision-screening exam.

Vision test: Required at renewal. Licensing personnel will conduct a test free, or drivers can have an exam performed by a licensed optometrist, ophthalmologist, or physician, who must complete a Vision Specialist Report and conduct the exam within six months of the renewal request.

Required at every renewal for drivers age 75 and older.

Road test: Required at every renewal for drivers age 75 and older.

How Do I Apply

To apply for the Benefit Access Program, click on the “Benefit Access” link under Programs at the top of the Department on Aging Website. You will find the link to the Benefit Access Online Application on the right side of the page.

If your Benefit Access Application is approved, the Illinois Secretary of State’s office will allow you a license plate fee discount for one vehicle.
