Remote Jobs Can Now Be Found In Manufacturing Construction And Other Surprising Industries
| Tech companies like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter have made headlines recently for allowing their employees to work from home permanently, even after their corporate offices reopen. But, of course, remote work isn’t specific to just the tech industry.
There are more jobs than ever that can be done remotely, and opportunities abound even in industries known for in-person duties, such as construction and manufacturing, according to a recent report from Upwork, an online platform that connects freelance workers with employers.
Upwork analyzed data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics about remote jobs in industries that traditionally require more manual skills, like manufacturing or mining. Upwork discovered that, surprisingly, many of these fields offer work-from-home jobs. Their findings echo a 2020 report from the University of Chicago and the National Bureau of Economic Research suggesting that 37 percent of all American jobs can be performed from home.
“I think the remote work revolution and the growth of remote freelancing is really touching almost every industry to some extent, said Upwork’s chief economist Adam Ozimek.
The most common remote jobs in non-tech industries generally require some skill with a computer, such as administrative work, communications duties or computer programming. In total, Upwork estimates, there are more than 27 million jobs with possible remote options at non-tech companies.
Working As A Senior Citizen
As seniors get older, they become less strong and retire. However, seniors may still want to work and earn money, and they should be allowed to do so.
Current events have paved the way for the increased relevance of remote work, and working from home may be a smart idea for seniors who, it has been confirmed, are more susceptible to more severe effects of COVID-19.

Senior Community Service Employment Program
The Senior Community Service Employment Program is the nation’s oldest program to help low-income, unemployed individuals aged 55+ find work.
AARP Foundation first matches eligible older job seekers with local nonprofits and public agencies so they can increase skills and build self-confidence, while earning a modest income. Based on their employment interests and goals, participants may also receive supportive services and skills training through an educational institution. Their SCSEP experience most often leads to permanent employment.

Arts Entertainment And Recreation
You don’t have to be onstage or even backstage to work in the arts. More than 1.32 million jobs in the arts, entertainment and recreation industry are professional services job that can be done from home. As of January 2021, about 19.6 percent of workers in this sector were doing their jobs remotely because of the pandemic. The AARP Job Board has postings in the arts, including social media managers, photography editors and online music teaching, that can be done from home.

Health Care And Social Assistance
During the pandemic, the idea of remote health care became more widely accepted, and as of January, 16 percent of the sector’s employees were working from home because of COVID-19. Still, many jobs in health care were work-from-home-friendly before then. A recent example includes an opening for a director of managed care at Nashville-based Envision Physician Services. Just over a quarter of health care and social assistance jobs are professional services jobs 5.58 million in total.

En español | The COVID-19 pandemic created a nationwide experiment in working from home, as many employers temporarily closed their physical offices to deter the spread of the coronavirus. This experiment, while originally meant to be a stopgap measure, could reshape how and where people work for years to come.
According to one recent survey, many older adults think a long-term switch could be a perfect fit. Work At Home Vintage Experts a company that specializes in placing people age 50 and older in contract positions for remote work surveyed 252 of its users in May to find out how they felt about changing to remote work. Most of the respondents were working part-time for insurance companies across the United States.

Working in retirement might seem like an oxymoron, but todays retirees and near-retirees are redefining what it means to transition into the next phase of life. In fact, the majority of American workers plan to continue working in retirement, with 41 percent going part time and 14 percent full time, according to the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies. Research cited by AARPs Public Policy Institute shows that workers 65 and older are twice as likely to work part time as workers ages 25 to 64.
Their reasons for working in retirement vary: Most of those polled by Transamerica who expect to work in retirement say its because they want the additional income. Others report needing to work because they couldnt otherwise afford retirement. Many also point to health advantages, wanting to stay active and keep their brains sharp . And some actually enjoy working and see their jobs as giving them a sense of purpose and a way of maintaining social connections .

Agriculture Forestry Fishing And Hunting
Even in the agriculture sector, there are 154,113 jobs in professional services, or 6.3 percent of jobs overall. In fact, as of January 2021, a slightly higher share of workers in this industry just over 5 percent were teleworking compared to workers in the hotel and food services industry.

While accommodation and food service jobs are more likely to require that workers report to the same location every day, 6.9 percent of the industry’s positions, or about 786,000 in all, are professional services jobs. Employment in this field overall has suffered greatly during the pandemic, so it’s unclear when hotels will get fully back to business, for both on-site and remote workers.

Medical Records Transcriber/medical Coder/billing
The nitty-gritty: Computer proficiency, word processing skills and a fast internet connection are tools of the trade. You don’t need a formal background in medicine instead, a familiarity with diagnostic procedure lingo and medical abbreviations, as well as an ease working with electronic health records systems, is required. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics , medical records and health information technician jobs employ about 189,930 people.
It can be tedious to transcribe dictation to electronic written reports. There can be background noise, phones ringing and mumbled speech by doctors as they orally review physical exams, emergency room visits and chart rundowns. Increasingly, voice recognition software is used to transcribe these recordings, but computer-generated documents are often riddled with errors and require careful editing. Fast turnarounds, usually within 24 hours, are part of the game. Employers range from doctors’ offices to hospitals, but given the nature of the job, you’re not limited by geography. You might live in Virginia but work for a medical practice in Miami. Medical coders and billers receive emailed patient data from a hospital or doctor’s office, determine the correct medical code used by health insurance companies to process patient claims, then return the information for processing.
Median pay: BLS reports that as of May 2015, medical records and health information technician jobs pay a median hourly wage of $17.84.
