How Can I Get Tested

There is plenty of testing capacity. The Missouri State Public Health Laboratory and many commercial labs have testing capability, and more labs will have testing capability soon. Every healthcare provider should have a plan for getting their patients tested for monkeypox when they need it.

If you have symptoms of monkeypox, you should see a health care provider for testing. If you do not have a provider, call local public health agency. You should only get tested for monkeypox if you are experiencing symptoms.

What Are The Symptoms

You may experience all or only a few of the symptoms of monkeypox. Monkeypox symptoms usually start within 3 weeks of exposure to the virus.

  • Most people with monkeypox will get a rash. Some people have developed a rash before flu-like symptoms.
  • The flu-like symptoms may include fever, headache, muscle aches and backache, sore throat, cough, swollen lymph nodes, chills, or exhaustion.
  • If someone has flu-like symptoms, they will usually develop a rash 1-4 days later.
  • The rash may be located on or near the genitals or anus but could also be on other areas like the hands, feet, chest, or face.
  • The rash will go through several stages, including scabs, before healing. The rash can look like pimples or blisters and may be painful or itchy. The rash may also be inside the body, including the mouth, vagina, or anus.

Monkeypox can be spread from the time symptoms start until the rash has healed, all scabs have fallen off, and a fresh layer of skin has formed. This can take several weeks.

Missouri Gov Parson Announces New Acting Director For The Dept Of Health And Senior Services

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. Missouri Gov. Mike Parson on Tuesday named a longtime state health official as the agencys new acting director, a designation that will allow her to begin work immediately without going through a potentially grueling Senate confirmation process that derailed the Republican governors last health chief.

Parson picked Paula Nickelson, who has served in the Department of Health and Senior Services for more than 22 years, as the agencys new leader. He said the acting title could last indefinitely, potentially through the remaining three years of his term as governor.

I envision her as the director of public health, Parson said, and Im not looking for anyone else.

Nickelsons appointment comes one month after the Republican-led Senate scuttled the nomination of Don Kauerauf as health director amid a backlash from some conservative senators over COVID-19 policies and abortion. Though Kauerauf had served as director since September, he had to step down after failing to win Senate confirmation.

Only permanent department directors are subject to Senate confirmation. Parson sidestepped that process by naming Nickelson as an acting director. But he didnt rule out the possibility of eventually submitting Nickelson for confirmation as the permanent director.

Parson did say he did not need to talk to the Senate before the appointment.
