Aaa Offers Refresher Course For Senior Drivers

  • Monday, November 14, 2011 6:38pm

People older than 65 are the fastest-growing population in the country, according to the American Automobile Association.

The good news is that seniors generally practice safe driving skills. They buckle up and are less likely to speed or drive drunk, AAA says.

Still, seniors are most at risk for serious injury while driving and more likely to be injured in a car crash.

Thats one reason why AAA offers its AAA Driver Improvement Program, a refresher course on defensive driving skills.

The class gives practical guidance for traffic-accident prevention, and helps boost confidence and driver safety.

Drivers 55 years and older may qualify for an insurance discount after successfully completing the class.

Registration is required and the course costs $16 per person.

The next class is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Nov. 19, Edmonds Community College, 20000 68th Ave. W., Lynnwood.

AURORA, Ill., As drivers age its important they know and understand how to adjust for slower reflexes, weaker vision and other changes. AAAs RoadWise has been approved in Illinois. Upon successful completion of the course, the student is eligible to receive a discount on their auto insurance.

AAA RoadWise is a senior defensive online driving program and the course is designed to positively affect driving behavior for senior drivers and to help them learn about and adjust to age-related physical changes. As older drivers begin to experience physical changes to the body or feelings of driving discomfort, it is important to know and understand how to amend to these changes.

Driving is a skill that can and should be continually improved, said Molly Hart, spokesperson for AAA The Auto Club Group. Older drivers may become uncomfortable in certain driving situations and a driver refresher can improve comfort and safety behind the wheel.

The course includes:

  • Extending Your Safe Driving Career
  • Distractions, Drowsiness, Aggressive Driving & Road Rage
  • Managing Visibility, Time & Space
  • Alcohol & Medications
  • Comfort & Safety Tips

Another feature of the course allows senior drivers to become more familiar with the latest in-vehicle technology such as adaptive cruise control and lane-departure warning systems, added Hart. Learning the proper use of these and other safety systems will enhance senior drivers comfort when they are on the road.
