Sfo Station Only Sells Paper Tickets
As of October 2022, new plastic Clipper cards are not available to purchase at SFO station due to global supply chain issues. We encourage visitors to plan ahead and add Clipper to their phone in advance of arriving to the station instead of having to wait in lines to buy a paper ticket at the station. Clipper is available for mobile phones through either Apple Pay or . Clipper is a regional transit card that can be used on all transit in the Bay Area. If you are going to ride the Cable Car, ferry, or buses, put Clipper on your phone.
If you don’t have Clipper on your phone, you will need to purchase a paper ticket at the vending machines at the SFO station. Be sure to review the paper ticket fare chart at the station. There is a 50 cent surcharge per trip for paper tickets.

Make Every Segment Count
For me, the hardest part is trying to narrow down the routes I want to go on, then figuring out which cities I want to hop off and visit, since each one counts as a segment. For example, the Sunset Limited starts in New Orleans and stops in 22 cities including San Antonio, Tucson and Palm Springs before terminating in Los Angeles. If you were to ride all 46 hours and 35 minutes of it from end to end, it would count as one segment. If you were to stop off in each of those three cities along the way, for instance, it would count as four segments out of your precious 10, so you really have to be picky about where youre going.
Do a quick search of your ideal route through the Amtrak website or app before you book to determine if the ride youre thinking of is actually one segment or broken up into two or threeremember, each time you leave and re-board the train counts as one segment. If it says direct, youre looking at one segment. In a quick search for trains from New York City to Chicago, for instance, youll find options for direct service as well as two- and three-segment trips with stops in Washington, D.C. or Pittsburgh and Toledo, so choose the routing that makes the most sense for your travel needs.

The cost is $159 for adults and $79.50 for children. It is not valid on the California Zephyr, Texas Eagle, Sunset Limited or the Southwest Chief.
If you plan to travel out of California, check the price of getting the California Rail Pass and just combining it with a regular coach ticket vs. the USA Rail Pass to see which is cheaper.
How Much Does An Amtrak Rail Pass Cost
The Amtrak USA Rail Pass costs $499 per person and is good for 10 segments over a period of 30 days. The pass is good for 120 days after purchase, but once used will expire in 30 days. The rail pass is good for coach class travel only, and cannot be upgraded to a sleeper car.
The pass has gone on sale in recent history with the pass costing only $299 during the summer of 2021. Currently there is no information on a possible future sale.

If youre ready to plan an epic cross-country train trip, Amtrak has got you covered. The countrys main rail operator is offering its 30-day USA Rail Pass at a cost of $399, or $100 off the regular $499 price.
The deal lasts until March 29 and allows passengers to take up to 10 rides in a 30-day period. The first segment of trip can be booked up to 120 days after the pass is purchased and the 30-day period begins with the first leg of the trip.
Customers can purchase the pass on Amtrak.com, where they can also book and modify each segment of their rail journey. Pass holders will receive an electronic ticket for each train trip booked, which they will then present to the conductor when boarding.
Of the approximately 500 U.S destinations Amtrak services, some of the rail networks most popular routes include:
- Coast Starlight, a 35-hour journey from Seattle to Los Angeles that has been hailed as the most beautiful train ride in the United States
- California Zephyr from Chicago to Northern California

Senior discounts for travelers from North America age 60 and older are available on rail passes in the UK, Ireland, France, and Romania. You can save 10 percent on the price of your pass, but you’ll need to purchase it before you leave home. You may want to book seat reservations once you arrive, particularly in high season the pass alone does not guarantee you a seat and standing in a train corridor is not fun.
It’s worth noting that the rules for obtaining a senior discount for the Eurail pass can be particular. For example, you must be at least 60 years or older on the first day of your trip. Even if you turn 60 in the middle of the week, you will have to buy an Adult pass without a discount. Generally, this is not a huge inconvenience, but anyone celebrating their 60th birthday with a train trip to Europe will want to keep this in mind when making arrangements.
