Heather Glen – Little River, SC by D.R. Horton America’s Builder

Neighborhood and Community Services is proud to announce that Little River Glen Senior Center in Fairfax has completed SAGECares LGBT cultural competency training program and has earned the SAGECare Platinum credential. SAGE, which stands for Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders, assists senior care agencies in creating fully LGBT-inclusive services for the growing LGBT senior population, which will number 7 million by 2030.

This is a meaningful way to celebrate June Pride Month, said Lloyd Tucker, Director of Neighborhood and Community Services. The SAGE Platinum accreditation gives confidence to our older adult LGBT community that our senior centers are a welcoming environment for all. As a result of this accreditation, we are ensuring that we continuously apply principles and practices to meet the needs and concerns of LGBT older adults.

Since launching in 2016, more than 300 agencies have earned SAGECares respected credentials. The Platinum credential is given when 80 percent of employees have completed 1 hour of LGBT Aging Training and 80 percent of executives/administrators have completed 4 hours of training.

Little River Glen Affordable Senior Housing Project Secures Financing

An affordable housing option for seniors will soon be available in an area of Braddock District where housing stock has been limited.

At a board meeting on Tuesday , the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved a financing plan to rehabilitate 120 senior affordable housing units and construct 60 new units at a project known as Little River Glen.

Financing on the project is expected to close in October. The county will likely begin once financing is secured following a two-year schedule.

Accordingly, current projections would have completion in the fall 2024, said Benjamin Boxer, spokesperson for FCHRA.

The project is spearheaded by the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority, which owns Little River Glen I, a 120-unit building built in the 1990s and a senior center. FCHRA also owns an adjacent property thats approved for 60 new senior affordable housing units, known in planning jargon as Little River Glen IV.

Both options will be restricted to seniors age 62 and above with incomes at or below 60% of the Area Median Income.

FCHRA is seeking multiple funding options for the project to move forward, including $7 million as a loan from the authoritys funding resources, $1.5 million from its operating fund, and $1.4 million in a loan from the countys affordable housing development and investment fund.

Overall, the project requires up to $40 million in bonds to be authorized.

Fairfax County Reopens Most Senior Centers With Limited Activities And Hours

A majority of Fairfax Countys senior centers have reopened, allowing residents to come in to workout, play games, and use the computers.

Eight of the countys 14 senior centers opened their doors on June 29 for the first time since for self-directed activities, meaning those that are not led by staff like card games, ping-pong, billiards, working out in the fitness room, and using the computer labs.

The centers that are now open are:

  • Herndon Senior Center
  • Kingstowne Center for Active Adults
  • Lewinsville Senior Center
  • Lincolnia Senior Center
  • Little River Glen Senior Center
  • Lorton Senior Center
  • Sully Senior Center
  • Wakefield Senior Center at Audrey Moore RECenter

Residents can use any of the centers, even if its not their usual one. Lunch and bus service can also be provided by calling the individual center.

However, the centers currently have limited hours, operating from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday.

Residents also have to sign a liability waiver prior to visiting. Masks are still required for those who are not fully vaccinated, but are optional for those who are.

The remaining six centers will reopen on Sept. 7, with the exception of Hollin Hall in Alexandria, which is undergoing renovations.

At that time, all of the centers will revert to full capacity, including bringing back instructor and staff-led activities, a spokesperson for the countys Neighborhood & Community Services says.

The senior centers cater to residents 50 years and older.
