Over 55 Unemployed And Looking For Work

For more than 50 years, the Senior Community Service Employment Program has provided older adults 55 and older with opportunities to fill entry- and mid-level positions with employers in their local communities. AARP Foundation SCSEP has successfully moved thousands of older job seekers into jobsproviding them with opportunities to use their skills while also offering valuable work experience.

Health Care And Social Assistance

During the pandemic, the idea of remote health care became more widely accepted, and as of January, 16 percent of the sectors employees were working from home because of COVID-19. Still, many jobs in health care were work-from-home-friendly before then. A recent example includes an opening for a director of managed care at Nashville-based Envision Physician Services. Just over a quarter of health care and social assistance jobs are professional services jobs 5.58 million in total.

Seniors face unique challenges when looking for a job. The AARP Foundation’s Senior Community Service Employment Program helps low income, unemployed seniors become competitive in the job market.

Those in the program are placed in assignments with a host agency. Host agencies include nonprofits, daycares and public agencies.

They can train, learn new skills and brush up on their old skills and really build that confidence and get that hope to obtain a job and exit from the program, said Elexia Torres, AARP Foundation regional manager.

The process of finding a job has evolved in recent years. SCSEP gives workers hope for their next step by serving as a liaison between them and their host agency, as well as a potential employer.

For potential employers, working with those in the SCSEP can help provide them with mature, experienced workers.

Its a great way to be able to support the community, Torres said. We pay the wages, so we provide them with a dependable, great workforce to help them achieve their goals for their organization and their mission. Youre really changing their lives one job at a time and helping pull our seniors out of poverty.

SCSEP experiences often lead to permanent employment.

Were building and helping our 55 and over folks to feel wanted and needed because so many of them desire to continue to provide in the workforce, Torres said.

In fact, according to a survey by Benenson Strategy Group, about 23 percent of Uber’s drivers are over 50. Plus, two-thirds of Uber contractors have no previous job history as drivers. So these services offer suitable jobs for older people with no experience but clean driving records.

5. Courier

Deliver food, packages, or other goods from restaurants, stores, or warehouses to the local people who ordered them. You need to be efficient in these jobs, since workers are often held to time-frame standards for delivery.

Medical courier work is also becoming more common. A medical courier transports and delivers test results, lab specimens, images , medications, and other medically necessary items.

    Remote Jobs Can Now Be Found In Manufacturing Construction And Other Surprising Industries

    | Tech companies like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter have made headlines recently for allowing their employees to work from home permanently, even after their corporate offices reopen. But, of course, remote work isnt specific to just the tech industry.

    There are more jobs than ever that can be done remotely, and opportunities abound even in industries known for in-person duties, such as construction and manufacturing, according to a recent report from Upwork, an online platform that connects freelance workers with employers.

    Upwork analyzed data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics about remote jobs in industries that traditionally require more manual skills, like manufacturing or mining. Upwork discovered that, surprisingly, many of these fields offer work-from-home jobs. Their findings echo a 2020 report from the University of Chicago and the National Bureau of Economic Research suggesting that 37 percent of all American jobs can be performed from home.

    I think the remote work revolution and the growth of remote freelancing is really touching almost every industry to some extent, said Upworks chief economist Adam Ozimek.

    The most common remote jobs in non-tech industries generally require some skill with a computer, such as administrative work, communications duties or computer programming. In total, Upwork estimates, there are more than 27 million jobs with possible remote options at non-tech companies.

    Identify Companies Committed To Hiring Older Workers

    Start with those that have publicly pledged to level the playing field for older workers. More than 1,000 companies, including Humana, Microsoft, Marriott International and McDonald’s, have signed on to the AARP Employer Pledge program. Eligible companies can’t have had discrimination lawsuits within the past five years. They must also agree to recruit across diverse age groups and consider all applications equally, regardless of age. AARP also offers a jobs board to help match experienced candidates with companies who have committed to having an age-diverse employee base.

    The Age-Friendly Institute also certifies companies that are considered best-in-class for workers aged 50 and above. Applicants go through an extensive review and certification process, which includes committing to “meaningful employment, development opportunities and competitive pay and benefits for employees 50+.” The list, last updated in April, includes Aetna, Home Depot, Macy’s, Starbucks and Wells Fargo.

    Just be aware that these lists can change, and don’t give you the whole picture, so be sure to do your due diligence on any company you are considering, said Lance Robertson, a former U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Assistant Secretary for Aging, who is now a director at Guidehouse, a global consulting and IT services provider.
