Keep in mind that there are exceptions to this rule, but it will never be because of SpeedTalk. Your phone will have to be in good standing with your current or past carrier. You will also have to purchase one of our plans first and you should start the transfer process with SpeedTalk prior to your cancellation with your current carrier. Its very important that you do not cancel your account with your current carrier before the transferring process is completed.

If you currently do not have a phone number. SpeedTalk will generate one for you automatically, you just need to provide a zip code so we can issue a phone number based on that zip code.

Got Questions About Price Lock

Right now, at a time when prices are increasing everywhere with inflation on the rise, T-Mobile can provide more bill confidence. With Price Lock guarantee we wonât raise the price of your rate plan.

The Un-carrier pioneered this move with the Un-contract and todayâs itâs evolving to âPrice Lockâ. Is Unlimited Data Really Unlimited

It is, but the speeds you get may vary depending on your plan and how much data you use in a given month. Whereas in the past carriers would slow down or “throttle” your speeds if you pass a certain limit for the remainder of your billing cycle, today all three major providers say they’ll only do that in special cases.

To have your data slowed on most of the plans mentioned above, you will need to have:

1. Used over 50GB of data in a month.

2. Be in an area that is experiencing “congestion,” “heavy traffic” or if the network is “busy.” Examples of this could be at a sporting event or concert where there are tens of thousands of people in the same area uploading and sharing photos and videos.

All carriers say that in these cases your data should only be slowed “temporarily.” If you have an older unlimited plan, however, your threshold for when your data slows and how long it lasts may be different.

Consumer Cellular Pros And Cons

What We Like About Consumer Cellular
What We Didnt Like
  • No Prepaid Options: While I appreciated that Consumer Cellular doesnt require long-term contracts, it would have been nice to have the option to prepay for minutes. When providers allow this option, it means that any unused minutes can accumulate rather than disappear at the end of each pay period.
  • High Device Costs: Consumer Cellular offers several flip phones and smartphones that cost $50 or less however, these models are mostly outdated and limited in their functionality. For those looking to purchase newer models, the price could be upwards of $1000, a cost that is normally built into the service plans of traditional carriers.
  • Lack of Medical Alert: Although Consumer Cellulars plans and devices can compete with major mobile providers, they lack some of the features of providers that cater specifically to older adults, features such as medical alert functionality.
  • Confusing Return Policy: Many of our readers have reported being unable to return devices, even when they were in their original condition.

Best Cell Phone Plan Options For Seniors

T-Mobile Adds Essentials Plan to their 55 Senior Unlimited Plan Line-Up

As most cell usage is unlimited, seniors should focus on the data usage when comparing phone plans . Keep in mind that wearable devices, such as an Apple Watch, use data so that must be taken into account when thinking about where data usage fits into the plan you choose.

Budget is also a key factor when seniors look at the amount of data their cell phone plan provides. As a rule of thumb, you shouldnt spend more than $25 a month per line if you’re a light user. Note that some senior phone plans will include 24/7 emergency response.

Essentials 55+ For Basic Users

Cost

T-Mobile’s basic senior plan is a great choice for budget-conscious older adults on a fixed income. At $40 per month for a single-line plan or $55 per month for two lines, the Essentials 55+ plan’s price point is substantially cheaper than close competitors like AT& T, whose basic seniors service starts at $60 per line.

FYI: T-Mobile’s Essentials 55+ plan comes with access to 5G data, so if you do opt for a 5G-ready phone like the REVVL or iPhone 11, you’ll be good to go.

A quick heads-up here because this may get lost in the fine print. If you go with the Essentials 55+ plan, taxes and fees aren’t included, remember to factor the additional cost into your budget. Separate taxes and fees may apply for certain T-Mobile offerings and features on all three T-Mobile 55+ plans.

Plan Features

As with all of T-Mobile’s 55+ plans, you’ll also get unlimited talk, text, and data with the Essentials 55+ plan, so you can chat with your friends and grandkids all day long. One caveat on the data with this plan: After you use 50 GB of data in a month, you may experience slower speeds during high-traffic times. If you’re a light internet user, 50 GB of monthly data should be plenty. While T-Mobile can’t match the 19 million Wi-Fi hotspots of an Xfinity prepaid plan, you can turn your phone into a mobile hotspot to power your laptop if you’re on the go and need Wi-Fi in a pinch.

How Much Data Do I Need

The Best Cell Phone Plans for Seniors

In this day and age, most people are using their cell phones to check social media, stream video content, or simply browse the internet. If you think you’ll be doing any of those, then it’s definitely worth paying a bit extra to get a data allowance on your cell phone plan.

If you need a bit of help determining how much data you’ll need, here’s a quick guide on how much data TechRadar recommends, based on common uses:

  • Emailing and messaging – under 5GB of data a month
  • Social media and web browsing – 5GB a month
  • Streaming music – 10GB a month
  • Streaming HD video – 10GB+ a month

Of course, if you see yourself simply calling and texting only, then you can forgo the data allowance altogether and opt for a cheaper plan – a few of which we’ve included on our best cell phone plans for seniors list above.

  • Up to 15% off eligible phone accessories.

Essentials 55+ For Light Mobile Users

The Essentials 55+ plan is the most budget-friendly T-Mobile package for older adults. Prices start at $40 per month for a single-line plan or $55 per month when you sign up for two lines . Just keep in mind that, unlike the Magenta plans , pricing for the Essentials 55+ package doesn’t include taxes or fees. Still, T-Mobile’s stripped-down, entry-level plan is quite a deal. For comparison, AT& T’s Unlimited 55+ plan costs $60 per line per month , so T-Mobile will definitely save you money.

Quick Tip: The account holder is the only person that needs to be 55 or older on your plan. That means you can include family members of any age on your plan, so everyone can save.

The Essentials 55+ plan comes with:

  • Unlimited 3G mobile hotspot data
  • Unlimited 2G in Mexico and Canada

Unsure if the Essentials 55+ plan is enough for you? Think about how often and where you’ll be using your phone. If streaming and picture quality are important to you or you’re on the go a lot, you might be better off with one of the Magenta plans. While your data is technically unlimited with your Essentials package, you may see slower-than-average speeds once you hit the 50 GB mark. We’d also recommend looking into the Magenta plans if you want to add the whole family to your plan. While you’re limited to two lines on the Essentials 55+ plan, you can add up to four lines on either Magenta plan. On the other hand, if you want to keep things simple and affordable, the Essentials 55+ is the way to go.

Cell Phone Plans For Seniors: How Old Do You Have To Be

Getting older can have its perkslike saving money on your cell phone plan. Recently, many of the larger service providers released plans specifically designed for seniors, aiming to keep things simple and affordable with discounts.

Sprint and T-Mobile offer discounts to anyone at least 55 years old. Both provide two phone lines with unlimited talk, text and data for around $80 a monthan average savings of $40 a month. Verizon also has a 55+ plan limited to seniors living in Florida, and AT& T has the Senior Nation Plan available for anyone over the age of 65.

If you expand your search beyond the big-name wireless carriers, you find additional providers and plans that are great choices for seniors.

Lively, for example, doesnt have a specific age requirement, but offers a number of services and features seniors may find helpful, such as access to virtual urgent care, fall detection technologies and operators who can help call ride services, make phone calls or look up phone numbers.

Meanwhile, AARPs membership benefits include discounts on cellular services. Anyone over age 50 can join AARP.

Choosing A Cellular Plan

Before I chose a phone, I had to decide on a service plan. Consumer Cellular offers a wide range of plans, , and each of them included some amount of talk time, text messages, and data allowance. These plans are divided into two groups, Talk Only and Unlimited Talk and Text. Lets take a closer look at the differences between the two.

For a full list of Consumer Cellulars plans, look below, or check out this page: Consumer Cellular Phones for Seniors.

Type of Plan
$15 $16.67

Ultimately, I decided to sign up for Consumer Cellulars Unlimited Talk and Text plan with Unlimited Data, which would normally cost $60 per month. However, Consumer Cellular offers discounted rates for additional lines. Since I purchased three lines for myself and my children, the total cost for my service plan came to only $30 per month per line, meaning my grand total for service was $90 a month. Now, I can see why this might seem expensive to some, but considering comparable plans from major cellular carriers could run upwards of $200 a month for three people, I was impressed by how much of a bargain I was getting.

FYI: For only $15 a month, you can add on one or more phones to any existing Consumer Cellular plan, making it both easy and affordable for couples and families to share a wireless plan.

Senior Cell Phones: Do You Need One

A senior cell phone plan will give you extra discounts and savings from major wireless carriers if youre over the age of 55. And with an AARP membership, you can also save on phone plans if youre over 50 years old.

If youre unsure whether a senior cell phone plan is right for you or are too young to qualify, there are plenty of other affordable cell phone plans that can still give you the features you need at the price you wanteven if they arent designed specifically for seniors.

Understanding whats important to you and how you use your cell phone will get you one step closer to choosing the best phone plan for you.
