School District Property Tax Freeze
You may have heard something called the senior freeze. Essentially, this property tax break means that school district property taxes on a homestead cannot increase after the homeowner reaches the age of 65. If the school district property taxes decrease after the homeowner reaches the age of 65, the property tax rate will go down, but it will never go above the property tax freeze rate. There is one exemption to this freeze. If you make significant home upgrades or improvements considered beyond the scope of regular repair and maintenance, your freeze rate may be increased in some counties. You should consult your tax assessor collectors office to learn more.

The Restricted Drivers License
Sometimes, a physical or mental condition can impair a drivers ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. The most common of these conditions is poor vision, but others which may be age-related include cognitive skills like memory, coordination and flexibility.
In some circumstances, older drivers may have a restriction placed on their driver license. The types of restrictions vary, and are based on the results of your vision test, driving test, and the driving examiners assessment. A restricted driver license is intended to ensure that you are driving within your abilities. Some of the most common license restrictions are those that:
- Require eyeglasses, corrective contact lenses, or bioptic telescopic lens to be worn at certain times.
- Permit driving from sunrise to sunset only, or prohibit driving during rush hour.
- Restrict the geographical area in which a person is permitted to drive, or prohibit freeway driving.
- Require special mechanical devices, or an additional side mirror on the vehicle.
- Require extra support in order to ensure a safe and correct driving position.
The Texas Drivers Handbook has a list of restriction codes listed which may be placed on a license. These range from daylight driving only to restricting geographical areas in which you can drive. In any case, the addition or removal of restrictions is at the discretion of the Texas DOT.

Homestead Exemption For Seniors
Every Texas homeowner is eligible for a homestead exemption for their principal residence. These exemptions reduce the taxable value of the home. Since property taxes are determined based on a percentage of the homes value, this also decreases annual home tax bills. Homestead exemptions are at least a $25,000 property value reduction. Seniors qualify for an additional $10,000 reduction in most cases. Taxing districts can also offer up to 20% reduction in a homestead value with reductions starting at $5,000. Additionally, individual taxing districts can offer exemptions starting at $3,000. Most Texas seniors qualify from homestead property value exemptions of $35,000 to $40,000, depending on their individual taxing districts, which leads to a significantly lower property tax bill.
