Royal Canins aging formula pays special attention to joint and kidney health, digestibility, and a lowered fat content to maintain a healthy weight. Mixing 1 Part Royal Canin With 1 Part Water & My Kitty Is Doing Great
I started mixing wet food with water long ago because my cat rarely drinks water. 4 years ago he was diagnosed with Kidney Disease, but he’s now stabilized, and I think it has a lot to do with the fact the really, really likes Royal Canin. I stir in the water well, until the food texture is smooth. And he gets an all you can eat buffet 24/7 – as soon as he finishes his bowl, he gets a new one.

Best Organic: Castor & Pollux Organix Grain
Ingredients: Organic chicken, water sufficient for processing, organic chicken liver, organic pea protein, organic coconut flour, organic dried egg product, organic dried peas, organic flaxseed | Calories: 207 kcal/can | Protein: 9% min.
Double or triple the price of many other wet kitten foods
Only one flavor option for kittens
Many kitten foods are advertised as being organic but most are not. To be truly organic it must have the USDA organic green and white label on it and be made from completely organic ingredients, explains Dr. Blackburn.
Castor & Pollux Organix wet food for kittens is one of the rare, USDA organic certified kitten foods. This formula is made in the United States, is tested for quality throughout the production process, and is perfect for growing kittens. It has added superfoods including flaxseed, coconut flour, cranberries, and eggs and is also grain-free. To top it off, even picky eaters enjoy this wet food.
Purina Pro Plan True Nature kitten formula canned cat food is another great option since it has the same qualities but is fish-based. It has a slightly higher price per can but offers beneficial omega 3s from the fish and contains no chicken.
What Else Should Be Done At Weight Checks
The weight checks do not simply include a visit to the scales and a recording of weight on the growth chart. The veterinary healthcare team can use this opportunity to check in on a few other important topics:
- Diet history: ask what food the puppy is eating and how much. The owners may have switched foods since the last visit, or adjusted the portion size on their own.
- BCS: the body condition score system is not yet validated in puppies, but it can still be useful in conjunction with weight and the growth chart to determine if the puppy is over- or under-weight. It can also help get the puppy accustomed to having this assessment performed, and the owner may be encouraged to do a regular BCS at home.
- Activity: ask about the puppys activity levels are they starting obedience classes or going for more walks? An increase in activity may warrant an increase in energy intake.

Where Is Royal Canin Small Dog Food Made
Royal Canin makes most of their foods in facilities they own. However, these facilities are owned all over the world. They do have a few in the United States, though they have a dozen in China as well.
We do not know what foods they make where. They dont list the specific foods that are made in each facility.
Statistically speaking, most of their foods are likely made in China, as that is where most of their facilities are located. Therefore, this dog food is likely made in China.
However, because it is made in a facility owned by Royal Canin, the facility has to uphold the standards it set. Of course, we dont exactly know what standards they set. But, based on their very infrequent recalls, they are likely pretty good!

Usually over $1.50/can
Kittens who are weaning are new to the experience of chewing their food, so youll want to offer something that doesnt take much effort. Royal Canins Mother & Babycat formula is a mousse that is super soft and designed specifically for weaning kittens. Royal Canin has a long history of making high-quality pet foods, and this wet food is also well-accepted by tiny kittens. Since the only other experience they have with food is sucking milk from their mother or a bottle, kittens can be messy eaters when they start eating something else.
Because of this, Dr. Blackburn recommends feeding weaning kittens in a large, easily cleaned area and offering the canned food on a very large, shallow plate/flat surface. “They tend to be messy eaters and explore foods by walking in them and grooming said food off their paws, etc, she says.

Why Is Royal Canin Cat Food So Expensive
Many Royal Canin foods are considerably higher-priced than other products with similar ingredient lists. After decades as one of the two brands that are recommended most often by veterinarians, Royal Canin has a reputation that justifies its price.
Its one of the few brands that offer condition-specific products, which makes Royal Canin easy to recommend to frustrated patients and has earned it a place in veterinarian offices around the world. This lends the brand status and respect that goes beyond the veterinary line.

Benefits Of The Royal Canin Aging 12+ Diet For Senior Cats
Mally is on the Royal Canin Aging 12+ diet. She eats about 1/3 cup of dry food plus 1 can of wet food each day. Weve actually started feeding her the wet food in her favorite hanging-out spot because shes either too old or too lazy to walk up to the cat room . She does go up there to use the litter box still but at feeding time she either waits for us to bring the food to her or her to the food.
A few key benefits of the Royal Canin Aging 12+ diet for senior cats include:
Overall, Ive noticed positive changes in Mal since she started the Royal Canin Aging 12+ diet for senior cats. While her energy levels are still pretty low, I think it was a little unrealistic of me to expect my senior cat to jump up and start running around like a kitten again! Shes an old lady, shes earned her peaceful resting years! I can tell you, she devours the wet food! Thats definitely her favorite. She actually finishes it now instead of leaving half behind!

How Often Should You Measure
In order to interpret the data most accurately, frequent measurements are needed, especially early in the puppys life. This allows determination of what percentile curve the puppy is starting out on within the first couple of months of life, which gives a better idea of what the target weight should be at any given age. At a minimum, puppies should be weighed every two weeks, but the best option is to weigh them weekly. Make sure that these weights are recorded at the same time of day, as time of last meal, bowel movements and hydration status can all cause the weight to fluctuate during the day.
Bringing a puppy in for weekly weight checks may not be possible for some owners with busy schedules or who live further away, so the following home-based options can be considered:
- Bathroom scales: if the owner can safely lift the puppy, they can weigh themselves with the puppy and then subtract their own weight.
- Luggage scales: small puppies can be put into a pet carrier and weighed on luggage scales again subtract the weight of the empty carrier from the gross weight.
- Pet scales: these can be purchased online and will range in cost depending on the size of the scales.
If the owner is able to do some weekly weights at home, ideally the puppy should still attend the clinic for an assessment every four weeks , allowing the veterinary healthcare team to both ensure the puppy is growing well and to perform a BCS assessment.

Why Talk About Nutrition
Socialization and habituation
Visits to the clinic every few weeks for weight checks can be a great way to not only monitor the growth of the patient, but also to socialize a new puppy. Pets may learn to have positive associations with the clinic if they get praise and treats for things like going on the scale or allowing a brief physical exam for assessment of body condition score .
New puppies and kittens will visit the clinic a lot in their first year for vaccine appointments, testing for heartworm and other parasites, and spay and neuter surgery. These are all great opportunities to check in with the pet owner and to assess how well their new family member is growing, and to see whether they have questions about what they are feeding .

Kittens are growing cats, so their nutritional needs are different than adult cats. Wet foods designed specifically for kittens will help them grow healthy and strong, allow for chewing and swallowing even if they dont have all their teeth, and are a great way to wean them off of nursing.
Overall, wet foods are great for kittens. “Cats should be introduced to wet food early,” says Dr. Kerri Blackburn of Rivers Edge Animal Hospital in Rock Hill, South Carolina. “Many common diseases/illnesses that cats can get as they progress through life can be managed well with increased moisture in canned diets.” Also, as creatures that evolved in the desert, she says cats are not programmed to drink a lot, so feeding them canned food helps increase water intake.
Wet food is something all kittens should eat, but not all wet foods are the same. Dr. Blackburn says “canned foods with gravy, i.e. the shreds, chunks, etc., are actually pretty heavy on carbohydrates, especially those that come in gravy. The best type of canned food is the old fashioned paté.Ingredient variations can also make it confusing for a kitten owner to choose the right wet food for their young cat.
