    The Family Self Sufficiency Program

The Family Self Sufficiency Program is a component of the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program, but in addition to the rental subsidy, this program also provides case management. Persons interested in this program must be current participants for a minimum of 12 months and be in good standing with the Housing Office. The caseworker guides the participant in developing a five-year plan to achieve self sufficiency. Impediments to self sufficiency such as childcare, education, employment, transportation, and insurance are over-come through the involvement of local community agencies.

A monetary incentive of the FSS program is the escrow account. As job skills improve causing wages to increase, the participant pays a greater proportion of their rent and the City pays less. The City puts the difference in an escrow account. At the end of five years, if the participant has completed all of their goals and has been off all types of government cash assistance for the last year of their contract, they receive all the money in the escrow account. Participants have used this money to buy a home or continue their education.

For information on FSS, call Nina Martinez at 806-378-3098.

Many property managers will float from one property to another and will have several communities that they are responsible for managing. If you are not successful with calling and submitting contact forms, you may find it more beneficial to visit the community in person to speak with the manager directly.
