Even in a city like Orlando with a tax-free policy on retirement income and a surprisingly low cost of living, many senior citizens struggle to make ends meet.

Orlando, FL subsidized senior housing offers one possible way for elders to have financial freedom without compromising their quality of life.

As the name suggests, Orlando low income senior living apartments in Orlando are designed to offer affordable accommodations to qualifying elders. The rents for these units are reasonably priced, leaving the seniors with plenty of money left each month to cover their necessities.

Besides the cheap rent, a housing program for low income senior citizens offers them close proximity to other adults of their own age. In low income housing communities, each senior citizen is given an independent apartment. However, the elderly residents are regularly gathered for activities to encourage social interaction and an active lifestyle.

Amenities such as gardens, gyms, and picnic areas can often be found in these communities. You can also expect maintenance staff, community managers, and emergency response teams to be present on-site for the comfort of residents.

    What You Need To Know

    • The Preserve will open on Thursday with new tenants
    • Eligible applicants are at least 55 years old

One brand-new affordable housing community for seniors in the Orlando area is aiming to be a part of the solution. Itâs The Preserve at Emerald Villas, a 96-unit building that on Thursday will open for occupancy.

Already over a dozen leases have been accepted for new tenants at The Preserve. Eligible applicants are at least 55 years old, with incomes that fall below 60 percent of the Area Median Income for the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford area.

One of those applicants is Viola Dozier, 58, who is looking forward to hopefully getting a new start in a one-bedroom unit at The Preserve. There was a time when she couldnât afford a home of her own at all. After her husband died of health issues exactly six years ago, Dozier said she ran out of funds.

âI packed all my stuff in storage and I moved from one daughter to the other, to the other, to a brother, to a friend,â Dozier said.

Dozier was fortunate to have family and friends to count on. But she didnât have âa place that I could call home,â she said.
