The overarching goals of the Older Americans Act are the protection and enhancement of the autonomy, dignity, financial security, health and rights of older Americans. Legal assistance is a critical service in meeting these goals. Legal issues facing older individuals in Colorado often have more serious outcomes than those same legal issues facing any other segment of the population. Vulnerable older individuals are less likely to seek the assistance of an attorney, either due to affordability or because the person does not recognize that he or she has a legal need.
Colorado’s Legal Assistance Program assists older people with:

$5.5 Million Dollar Grant Makes Free Legal Help Available to More of Tennessees Vulnerable Senior Citizens
NASHVILLE The situation is not new: There is a staggering increase in the number of Tennesseans age 60 and older living in poverty and facing homelessness, hunger, abuse and exploitation, lack of access to benefits and healthcare at a time when they should be living out their golden years safely, securely, and with dignity.
What is new, though, is the way Tennessees civil legal aid providers are responding to this reality. A court settlement providing $5.5 million dollars over three years paved the way for the creation of a coordinated approach to assist Tennessee seniors facing legal problems. In a first-of-its kind network, known as the Tennessee Senior Law Alliance , the states four legal aid providers and the Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services are partnering to deliver free legal help to Tennessees elderly. TSLA attorneys will reach into all 95 Tennessee counties to help seniors identify and resolve core legal issues that often lead to and sustain poverty: wrongfully reduced or denied access to benefits and healthcare illegal barriers to obtaining and maintaining safe and secure housing physical, emotional, and financial abuse and exploitation and a lack of help with basic estate planning such as creating wills, advance directives, and powers of attorney.

When it comes to costs of transportation, and ensuring proper vehicle insurance is in place, there are a few important notes to consider. Caregivers can accompany clients on outings and appointments in 3 different ways:
1. Accompanying the client in a taxi or other third-party transportation company.
- When a caregiver accompanies a client in a taxi, the client will pay the normal cost for the caregivers time.
- The client also pays for the cost of the taxi.
- If arranged in advance, the Affinity Health caregiver can pay for the taxi, and the cost can be added to the clients regular invoice. There is no upcharge on the taxi cost from Affinity Health.
2. Driving the Client in the Caregivers Vehicle
- Many of our caregivers have a vehicle that they use to get to and from work. Just because a caregiver has a vehicle, does not mean they have the proper insurance to drive a client as a passenger.
- If a client would like to have a Affinity Health caregiver drive them to and from appointments in the caregivers vehicle, Affinity Health will ensure the proper insurance is in place before booking the shift for an outing.
- When caregivers use their own vehicle to drive a client, the client will pay the normal hourly rate for the caregiver, as well as a modest per-kilometer charge to cover gas and wear-and-tear on the vehicle.
- Affinity Health has a special waiver form that must be signed once in advance of taking this service.
