Five Star Senior Living Rebrands As Alerislife Marking Expansion Of Lifestyle Services

Katie Potter, President & CEO, Five Star Senior Living

Five Star Senior Living is changing its name to AlerisLife, reflecting a growing focus on offering more lifestyle services.

The company has updated its website to reflect the name change, and starting Jan. 27 it will trade on the Nasdaq stock market under the ticker symbol ALR.

The name change is a milestone in the Newton, Massachusetts-based companys ongoing evolution from primarily a senior living owner and operator to a more diversified and comprehensive partner, according to CEO Katie Potter a shift that was already underway.

As weve announced our strategy around building this platform and maybe acquiring services, growing services or partnering with people to deliver other services, we needed an umbrella brand that brought it all together, Potter told Senior Housing News. And thats really what AlerisLife is.

Despite the rebranding, the company will continue to use its Five Star Senior Living and Ageility brand names in its operations. And while the company is broadening its focus with the shift to AlerisLife, it still has deep roots in senior living operations.

That is still a very important part of our service offering, Potter said. But now, were looking at the whole customer in terms of what they may need across the spectrum, and to support them through their aging journey.

In conjunction with the rebranding, Five Star also appointed Lauren Cody to the role of chief customer officer and Michael Lopez to chief people officer.

What Experts Say

Discover Stress-free Senior Living

A national company like Five Star provides the reassurance of a service baseline, says Sarah Ordover, owner and senior living advisor at Assisted Living Locators in Los Angeles. The facilities that are part of a chain are generally better capitalized, the physical structure may be more up-to-date and they can offer more amenities, she says. The trade-off is that theyre usually more profit driven and less responsive to needs at an individual level. A local, stand-alone facility will be more intimately involved with its customers and their families.

Experts also note that in dealing with a large company, communication can present an issue. One of the biggest differences with a corporate facility is that it can be more challenging to advocate for a patient or loved one, and to personalize or receive more individualized care, says Kelly Smith, R.N., owner of Nestcare, a home health care agency based in Sarasota, Florida. In my experience, smaller, locally owned facilities can customize care more quickly and efficiently because they often have fewer staff involved in the process.

To be sure a senior living facility is right fit for a persons health needs, experts recommend attending an in-person tour. The most important thing is to get a close look at the people and the staff, Ordover notes, who suggests touring during an activity or at lunch to see the facilitys population and whether they are engaging with each other and employees.

How It Works

Older adults in need of assisted living, memory care or simply looking to be a part of a community are offered a variety of options at Five Star Senior Living. For mobile and active adults, independent living communities provide dining, activities and housekeeping amenities. For older adults who need consistent care, assisted living facilities offer medication reminders, assistance with dressing and bathing, transportation and help with pets. Seniors in memory care residences receive a customized program of recreational and occupational therapy based on their cognitive health needs.

Five Star also has programs to keep seniors healthy and active. Lifestyle 360, our holistic life engagement program, is based on the five dimensions of wellness: physical, intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual, says Abid-Wood. Our memory care communities all offer the Bridge to Rediscovery program, which is based on the Montessori philosophy. We create an environment that fosters exploration and engagement within a secure setting.

Some communities also provide rehab services, short-term stays and hospice care coordination. Older adults or family members interested in Five Star Senior Living services can search their ZIP code in the company website to locate the nearest facility to their area.
