Medicaids Coverage Of Assisted Living & Memory Care In Florida

Floridas Medicaid program pays for some, but not all, services in assisted living and memory care through the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care Program System . The program covers services in memory care and assisted living, but it can also help seniors receive care at home and avoid entry into a long-term care facility.

It pays for some home and community-based services and many medically necessary services. This includes:

  • Companionship
  • Homemaker services
  • Nutritional assessments

To be eligible for the Long-Term Care Waiver, seniors must meet the Medicaid income and asset requirements and must require a nursing home level of care. To apply, contact the Agency for Health Care Administration at 412-3600.

Adult Day Care Centers

Florida has 292 adult day care centers that go a long way in providing supplementary care to seniors who have family as their primary caregiver. Adult day care will take in adults during the day, usually every weekday but some may include weekends, while the primary caregiver is at work or other life responsibilities. Adult day care has grown into a great option for seniors who are not fully independent anymore, and need assistance throughout the entire day while their primary caregiver is away. Seniors will receive all their meals, and receive assistance with any daily tasks they need to complete like taking care of personal hygiene and taking their medications.

Adult day care centers are also a great way for seniors to socialize and feel a part of a bigger community. Some adult day care centers will have live music and performers to liven up the place and have a good time. Salon services and massage therapy can be had at some adult day care centers as well, inviting seniors to do these activities together and ward off feelings of loneliness through lasting friendships.

Seniors Desperate For Help Private Spots Drying Up

Many older residents, though, are not able to manage, according to caseworkers.

Most government-subsidized senior housing complexes in the area have no availability. But driving the crisis is that low-cost units on the private market are now disappearing with landlords choosing to sell their properties or spiking the rent.

My private landlords used to be my go-to, said Michelle Scott, housing specialist and case manager at the nonprofit Turning Points in Manatee County. Now I cant even go to them.

The biggest challenge, she said, is that the majority of clients have Social Security incomes of $794 a month.

And I have no earthly clue where Im going to put them on an income of $794, she added.

Some of her clients are former social workers themselves. Others are retired law enforcement or spent years working in the local service sector.

Many come into her office in shock, having worked all their lives and retired here unaware of how expensive it would end up being. After housing costs eat through their retirement savings, they are lost, with nowhere to go.

They just need to find somewhere to cry, some of them, Scott said. They just want to sit and cry because thats about all they can do.

Housing Choice Voucher Program For The Elderly

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program is a federally-funded entity that helps low income families, disabled individuals, and the elderly get affordable housing in the state. When qualified, the individuals receive a section 8 housing voucher. They can use this voucher towards financial assistance like rent and utilities.

The housing voucher program in Tampa has two basic requirements of eligibility: income and residency. According to the guidelines, the applicant must be a U.S. citizen and resident of Florida. They should also fall under the very income limit set by the HUD. This is typically 50% or less of the median income.

The application process for the housing voucher program in Florida is carried out through the Public Housing Authority . Once the prospective renter finds a suitable apartment that is eligible by the PHA and accepts a housing voucher, they can submit an application and wait for the qualification process to commence.

The only drawback of this program is the high demand. Since anyone over the age of 19 with a low income can apply for the voucher, the waiting list is very lengthy. However, elderly residents of Florida are given a greater priority if their needs appear to be more immediate.
